Global Taxonomy Initiative Japanese Focal Point
National Institute for Environmental Studies
The aim of the Global Taxonomy Initiative (GTI) is to enable the provision of appropriate taxonomic information and capacity to underpin decision making in conservation of biological diversity, sustainable use of its components and equitable sharing of the benefits derived from the utilisation of genetic resources. This will be achieved by addressing (a) the lack of taxonomic information on the identify of components if biological diversity in many parts of world including Asia, and (b) the need to build capacity for taxonomic activity in all regions, but especially developing countries, including reference materials, databases, and taxonomic expertise relevant to the objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity. National Institute for Environmental Studies works together with partners of Species 2000 Asia Oceania to implement GTI programme of work in Asia Oceania region.
